When the clock strikes midnight on December 31, 2011 will end, of course, and 2012 will begin.

Also coming to an end – the long legislative career of John Carey.

Carey is calling it quits at the Ohio Statehouse after spending 17 years there as a state representative and senator.

Carey – who's 52 years old – started in the Ohio House in 19-95.

He went to the State Senate in 2002, then returned this year to the House.

Before he went to Columbus, Carey was mayor of Wellston for seven years.

Now he's leaving to take a job at Shawnee State University.

Effective January 1, Carey will be assistant to the president for Government Relations and Strategic Initiatives at Shawnee State.
