The Zanesville Community Theatre will present the Steven Sondheim musical Sweeney Todd, the Demon Barber of Fleet Street April 20 through April 29 at the 940 Findley Avenue performing space in Zanesville, Ohio.
Over a year in the planning, a large cast of actors and musicians have come together to bring the chilling 19th century tale of revenge and blood-lust to the stage.
Director Eric Blake and musical director Tom Thompkins have been working together since late 2011 to find the acting and singing talent needed to create the characters found in the story of the wronged barber, his lost wife and child and the ever-practical pie shop owner.
A live orchestra will provide accompaniment. Producers Janice Blake and Angel Palmer have been working with many others to bring all of the technical issues required of the show together.
The cast has drawn performers from Zanesville as well as several surrounding counties and includes Steve Hendershot as Sweeney Todd; Sheryl Wise as Mrs. Lovett; Todd Lemmon as Judge Turpin; Ashley Krieger as Johanna; Matthew Harper as Anthony; Jason Shaffer as Tobias; Cindy Houpt as the Beggar Woman; Eric Blake as the Beadle and Sean McClure as Pirelli.
Because the Zanesville Community Theatre seats only 92 for each performance, it is recommended that tickets be purchased or reserved in advance. Reservations may be made by calling the theatre box office at 740-455-6487. Tickets may also be purchased online by visiting www.zct.org.
Curtain time is 8 p.m. on April 20, 21, 27 and 28. There will be two matinee performances beginning at 2:30 p.m. on April 22 and April 29.
