Athens is now under a water shortage alert

The city's service safety director issued the alert Monday.

It means some water use activities are banned.

It was issued because power outages have caused "significant operational impediments."

A news release says "While the situation is stable and no areas have yet run out of water, supplies are low in some tanks and reservoirs."

The release goes on to say "the city is slowly refilling the key storage units around the system."

Under the alert, residents are banned from washing motor vehicles, watering lawns, and filling swimming pools.

The alert also advises water users to implement the following voluntary water conservation measures:
     -operate washing machines and dishwashers only with full loads;
     -reduce the number of toilet flushes;
     -and stop "all other unnecessary water usage."
