Fewer Athens County registered voters turned out to cast ballots this election season compared to overall numbers from 2008.

Board of Elections Director Debbie Quivey says this year 26,478 of 47,858 registered voters cast ballots, or a little more than 55 percent.

That is down almost 10 percent from the 31,645 of 49,304 registered voters who cast ballots in 2008.

However, early voting turnout was slightly higher this year compared to the last presidential election.

In 2008, 8,994 people voted by early or absentee ballot and this year there were 9,414 who returned ballots.

Quivey says she has one word for how this year's election went: "fantastic."

According to the Ohio Secretary of State's Office, voter turnout in the state of Ohio was just short of 2008's 70 percent, coming in at 68 percent of registered voters actually casting a ballot.
