The Nelsonville-York Lady Buckeyes played lock down defense and came away with a 42-34 victory over the Wellston Lady Golden Rockets Monday night.

N-Y would hold the Lady Rockets under 35 percent shooting on the night, and would hound their seemingly flustered opponents into numerous turnovers.

No Wellston player would finish in double figures, but Jordan Davis and Taylor Folden would both finish with nine points.

Madison Davis, and the rest of the hard-nosed Lady Buckeyes squad made venturing into the paint hard for Coach Scott Sturgill’s squad.

On the other side of the ball, the Lady Golden Rockets and their 2-3 zone were unable to limit N-Y’s ability to score. Even with the zone, The Lady Buckeyes and Angela Meade still penetrated gaps as Meade was able to throw a few nifty scoop passes to Davis deep in the paint or on the block for several scores.

Meade would finish the night with nine points, four rebounds, and several assists,

while Davis, who worked hard on both ends of the floor, rounded off the night with 14 points and nine rebounds.

Coach Amanda Dalton commented on her team’s solid offensive execution.

“We knew as long as we stuck to the fundamentals, faking passes and making passes, and hitting the open person when she’s there, and not holding the ball, that’s what I think made us successful tonight.”

Wellston will look to improve their fortunes Thursday, Jan. 17 when they travel to Athens to take on the Lady Bulldogs. Nelsonville-York looks to build on this win when they host Trimble at home Wednesday, Jan. 16.
