The state says total liquor sales in Ohio climbed to a record $849 million in 2012, up 7 percent from the previous year.

The Ohio Division of Liquor Control said Wednesday that wholesale sales of spirits to restaurants, bars and clubs increased by more than 5 percent to $257.8 million.

The state noted there was a smaller increase of 4.2 percent in the number of gallons of spirits sold compared with 2011.

The division sold 11.9 million gallons at its hundreds of contract agencies around Ohio.

State Commerce Director David Goodman says the state continues to see buyers trading up to purchase premium brands.

The top-selling brand was again Kamchatka vodka, followed by Jack Daniels whiskey.
