After day one of the Mid-American Conference Swimming and Diving Championships in Buffalo, N.Y., Ohio sits in second place with 172 points.
The Bobcats got off to a good start as they finished second to the hosting Buffalo Bulls in the 200-yard freestyle relay. Lauren Funk, Katey Brooks, Addy Ferguson and Haley Clark combined to swim for a time of 1:31.58 and earned 34 points for Ohio.
In the 500-yard freestyle the ‘Cats claimed a combined 29 points with a second place finish from junior Laurin Williams and a seventh place finish from freshman Bianca Hauzer. Williams accounted for 17 points with a time of 4:47.31 and Hauzer accounted for the other 12 with her time of 4:54.26.
In the third event of the day, the 200-yard individual medley, Ohio fell behind its competition, as it had no swimmer competing in the finals.
With solid performances in the 50-yard freestyle finals, The Green and White scored 33 points. Senior swimmers Funk and Brooks earned third and fifth place respectively to grab 30 of those points.
Haleigh Bartlett took third place in the one-meter diving finals with a score of 299.90. She just edged out her fellow sophomore teammate Morgan Srail, who took fourth with a 299.40 score. Together, four Bobcats scored 46 points in the event.
In the last event of the day, the 600-yard medley relay, an Ohio time of 3:42.81 was good enough for fourth place and 30 points.
After the first day of competition, Ohio only trails Maimi. The RedHawks lead the pack with 191 team points.
Preliminaries for Friday’s events will start at 11 a.m. and finals start at 7 p.m.
