The state's acting schools chief is moving on after failing to secure the job as Ohio's permanent superintendent.

Acting Superintendent Michael Sawyers informed state Board of Education President Debe Terhar in an email late Thursday that he is taking a job as chief of operations and strategic development for the New Albany-Plain Local Schools outside Columbus.

His resignation will be effective April 12.

Sawyers served as head of the Ohio Department of Education on an acting basis since Superintendent Stan Heffner retired amid ethics questions in August. He finished second for the permanent job, which on Tuesday went to Richard Ross.

Ross is director of Gov. John Kasich's Office of 21st Century Education.

Terhar said Sawyers' tenure reflected "the highest traditions of public service."
