The West Virginia Senate is planning further changes to Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin's education proposal.

Attempts at amending the bill Friday postponed its scheduled vote on passage. The bill is back up for a vote Monday.

Senate President Jeff Kessler said a proposed amendment will give extra weight to hiring recommendations from principals and faculty senates.

Another change would encourage year-round school calendars while marking off four consecutive weeks for maintenance.

Out of the bill is Tomblin's proposal allowing the national Teach for America program into West Virginia classrooms. Lawmakers may instead study such nonprofit educator efforts.

Friday's vote was postponed amid talks both with House lawmakers and groups representing teachers and school workers. Those organizations oppose the governor's proposed rewriting of hiring and transfer policies.
