The sanctioning body for prep sports in Ohio is proposing a new way to classify schools.

The Ohio High School Athletic Association's proposal would count students on a team's roster who are from outside that school's district in football, soccer, volleyball, basketball, baseball and softball. If adopted by a vote of the schools, the new rules would take effect in the 2015-16 school year.

A petition asking for separate state tournaments for public and non-public schools in the state has been withdrawn, with backers of that now behind the new OHSAA proposal.

For years, public schools have complained that parochial and non-private schools have an advantage in Ohio because they can draw athletes from a much larger area. The new criterion would address that.
