Athens City Council held a public hearing regarding the annexation of the former Columbia Gas property along East State Street at their meeting Monday evening.

Mayor Paul Wiehl said the annexation was requested by the current owners so that they could invite potential developers to use the property.

Once annexed into the city, the property will be used as a manufacturing industrial zone. Residential construction will be prohibited on the area.

Wiehl said that the annexation process has been in the works for about three years.

During the meeting, council member Chris Fahl said that the annexation was the last step of a multi-step process and that she was glad that the process was finally being finalized.

Wiehl said that the area has been languishing, especially due to a lack of adequate city services such as sewers and water.

He said that the 15-acre property could be split into three 5-acre lots for retail development.
