A bid to grant more local control to West Virginia cities and towns now targets some gun ordinances.

The House of Delegates on Wednesday amended a proposal to continue an experiment with home rule.

This pilot program has allowed four West Virginia cities to cut red tape, reduce blight and improve finances. The bill invites more municipalities to apply to take part.

Wednesday's change would forbid municipalities that participate from regulating firearm sales, carrying or possession. It's similar to a bill the House passed earlier but has idled in the Senate.

Delegate Patrick Lane proposed the amendment. The Kanawha County Republican also included language so participants could still bar firearms from municipal buildings. That would not apply to parking garages.

The House expects to vote on the amended bill Thursday.
