D.J. Cooper confirmed via text message Saturday that he will be working out with the Orlando Magic on Monday, June 24, three days before the NBA Draft.
Mike Naiditch, Cooper’s agent, told WOUB Sports after the Portland workout that Orlando was on the list of three teams interested in having Cooper work out for them.
Orlando has two picks in the 2013 NBA Draft, No. 2 and 51. Some mock drafts have them picking Michigan’s Trey Burke with the No. 2 pick, but as the pre-draft process has gone on, it appears the Magic are leaning towards taking the best player available. Depending on their selection at No. 2, they could be targeting a point guard in the late second round at No. 51, where Cooper is expected to be chosen.
The Magic’s current point guard situation has Jameer Nelson as the starter, but Orlando is looking for a fresh start with a young nucleus after the departure of Dwight Howard last offseason. With Nelson recently turning 31 and Beno Udrih becoming a free agent, Orlando is expected to choose a point guard with one of their two selections.
The NBA Draft is June 27th at 7 p.m.
