Judge To Decide On Court Order On Voter ID Requirements In Ohio

Attorneys for Ohio's top election official say he's committed to keeping in place broad definitions of acceptable forms of voter identification unless the Legislature changes the law.

The comments came Friday before a Columbus federal court judge who's weighing whether an expiring court agreement from 2010 should be extended. The decree governs provisional ballots and forms of voter ID in the perennial presidential battleground.

Voter advocates want the order extended until at least 2021. They argue the agreement helps prevent local elections boards from applying unequal ID and provisional ballot standards that could leave some voters disenfranchised.

The state's attorneys said there's been no evidence showing that a single Ohioan would be denied the right to vote by letting it expire.

A decision is expected in 10 to 14 days.
