The Ohio Arts Council's Riffe Gallery will present Poetics of Pattern from July 25-Oct. 6, 2013.
Curated by Janice Lessman-Moss, a professor at Kent State University, the 13 artists in Poetics of Pattern explore the process of design-making through a variety of scales, media, forms and colors.
Through their repetitive processes, we find a language of beauty and meaning that seeks to create order and connection in our increasingly complex lives.
Patterns have been used by artists as symbolism, metaphor and decorative embellishment throughout history.
In Poetics of Pattern, the viewer will engage with geometric ornamentation, historical motifs, fabric constructions, ceramics, recycled materials and more though exciting works that relate the mesmerizing and often meditative facets of pattern to a contemporary audience.
Artists in the show include: Laurie Addis, Kent; Gianna Commito, Kent; Dragana Crnjak, Boardman; Nancy Crow, Baltimore; Kristine Donnelly, Cincinnati; Robert Geyer, Bowling Green; Susan Li O'Connor, Columbus; Danielle Rante, Columbus; Judith Salomon, Shaker Heights; Douglas Sanderson, Cleveland Heights; Audra Skuodas, Oberlin; Casey Vogt, Akron; Carly Witmer, Pleasant Hill.
Join the Riffe Gallery for the free opening reception of Poetics of Pattern on Thursday, July 25 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Donated food will be available, and wine will be available for purchase.
