The Athens County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the alleged sexual assault of a 12-year-old girl.

Deputies responded to a complaint of an older male who had allegedly attempted to sexually assault the girl at her residence in New Marshfield on Tuesday.

The girl told deputies that she and her parents had stayed with friends on Monday and when her parents left the next morning the attempted sexual assault occurred, according to Athens County Sheriff Patrick Kelly.

The girl walked about one mile to another residence to call 911, Kelly said in a news release.

Investigators are not releasing the name of the person of interest in the case.

Kelly declined to specify the connection between the suspect and the girl.

The investigation is ongoing.

No charges have been filed in the case.
