Starting this fall, Athens-area artists will have a new opportunity to bounce ideas off their fellow creatives.

ARTS/West plans to host a monthly Art Salon where local visual artists, poets, musicians and art lovers can share and talk about new work.

"Artists will be able to showcase and discuss their work without the pressures of doing a full exhibit or performance," said ARTS/West Events Coordinator Kelly Lawrence.

Lawrence, who came up with the idea after attending a similar event in Gallipolis, added that she hopes a wide variety of people will turn out for the gatherings.

"It will be a venue for both visual and performance arts of all kinds. All skill levels and all ages are welcome, but everyone must be willing to discuss their work openly," she explained. "We encourage others who are not displaying or performing art to attend as well."

The first Art Salon is scheduled for Sept. 6, which will coincide with an exhibit by Athens photographer Jim Shirey. Anyone planning to attend the meetings should confirm in advance, according to Lawrence.

"We want to accomodate everyone," she said.
