The West Virginia State Treasurer's Office returned $6.2 million in unclaimed assets to owners in the 2013 fiscal year.

Treasurer John Perdue says Kanawha County, the state's most populous county with 192,000 residents, led the way with $2.3 million returned.

Unclaimed property can include a left-behind utility deposit, a forgotten paycheck or stock dividends not cashed and reported as unclaimed.

Seventy-year-old William Ramsey of Harrison County received two unclaimed property checks totaling nearly $48,000. He said he used the money to pay off a lake house.
