The Ohio Bobcats earned eight votes in the USA Today Preseason Coaches’ Poll released Thursday, but remained unranked entering the season. The poll counts for one-third of the formula determining Bowl Championship Series standings.
Ohio is one of four Mid-American Conference schools to earn votes in the poll, up from just one team last season. This feat marks the MAC’s growing national presence in college football after Northern Illinois’ surprise trip to the FedEx Orange Bowl last season.
The Bobcats cracked the Top 25 last season in the Coaches’ Poll, earning the No. 23 ranking after starting the season 7-0.
Ohio’s first opponent of the regular season, the Louisville Cardinals, ranked No. 9 in the poll.
USA Today recently ranked Ohio as the 39th best team in the nation as a part of its College Football Countdown.
Northern Illinois, last season’s MAC Champions, won the most votes in the Coaches’ Poll of any MAC team with 19.
Kent State earned three votes. Toledo earned one.
