An intensive one-week chamber music festival inspired by the spirit of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and the beautiful surroundings of Athens is taking place today through Aug. 10.

The Mozart on the Green Festival and Academy is hosting renowned musicians from around the country to teach young musicians during the day and present world-class chamber music concerts in the evenings.

The evening performances, hour-long casual concerts hosted nightly in several different locations around the city, promise to deliver delightful and inspiring sounds for audiences of all ages.

The Mozart on the Green Festival and Academy is the creation of Steven Huang, director of Orchestral Activities at Ohio University. Working with Michael Carrera, associate professor of Cello at Ohio University and founder of the nonprofit organization Juniper Music Festival, Huang combines a casual chamber music concert series with education.

The Juniper Music Festival is a nonprofit organization dedicated to bringing classical music to smaller or underserved communities and the pairing seemed natural.

This year’s series includes guest artists Donald Oehler, clarinet, University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill; and Pablo Mahave-Veglia, cello, Grand Valley State University. Ohio University music faculty and alumni will round out the performances, including voice, strings, piano, and winds.

Music will include at least one work by (or inspired by) Mozart each night, complemented by works from the 17th to 20th centuries.

All performances are free and open to the public and will culminate with the Festival Academy student performance on Saturday, Aug. 10 in the Glidden Recital Hall. All performances are at 7 p.m.

The complete listing of performances is as follows:

Tuesday, Aug. 6 Christ Lutheran Church

Wednesday, Aug. 7, Under the Elms, College Green

Thursday, Aug. 8, Dairy Barn

Friday, Aug. 9, Stuart’s Opera House, Nelsonville

Saturday, Aug. 10, Glidden Recital Hall, Festival Academy Student Performance
