A woman from The Plains was arrested after allegedly walking into the Foodland grocery story intoxicated and shoplifting a bottle of whiskey.

Crystal Smith was found at the store by Athens County sheriff’s deputies after her boyfriend reported that she was drunk and going to Foodland to shoplift, according to Sheriff Pat Kelly.

After Smith was placed under arrest, she was told to place any property on the back of Deputy Chris Tomsha’s cruiser. Smith allegedly pulled an unopened bottle of whiskey from under her coat and told Tomsha she carried it from her house.

Tomsha spoke with Foodland staff who said the store did sell that brand of whiskey and the item number was checked on the shelf. Another employee allegedly said he had seen Smith take the bottle off the shelf and conceal it under her coat. When he asked her about it, he alleged that she denied taking it and left the store.

Smith was arrested and charged with misdemeanor theft. She also and an outstanding active arrest warrant. She remains in the Southeast Ohio Regional Jail on a $545 cash/surety bond on the theft allegation and $5,000 bond with 10 percent posting allowed on the charge of aggravated possession of drugs, according to the Southeastern Ohio Regional Jail’s website.
