Kentucky residents can drop off unwanted tires free of charge during a succession of amnesty events across the state starting Thursday and continuing through October.

The state Division of Waste Management is sponsoring the events and says waste tires are recycled for products such as tire-derived fuel or crumb rubber mulch.

The Waste Tire Trust Fund collects $1 for every new tire purchased in the state and finances the program. The Division of Waste Management says more than 22 million scrap tires have been collected during amnesty days and illegal open dump cleanups since the program began in 1998.

County solid waste coordinators can provide details of locations and drop-off times.

Events are scheduled in 9 counties, including Boyd, Elliott and Greenup.
