A draw only makes sense between two teams as equally matched as Rio Grande and Lindsey Wilson. Two of the NAIA’s top programs (No. 5 and No. 4, respectively) battled in Columbia, Ky., Saturday night and fought to a 1-1 draw.

The schools played two overtime periods after 90 minutes. In that time the RedStorm and Blue Raiders managed to put home two scores total, but that was all for the very talented squads.

Both teams managed four shots on goal, with Rio attempting nine and Lindsey Wilson taking eight total shots.

Maximilliano Viera scored early for the RedStorm at the 5:07 mark, and it was the only goal for either squad until the 84th minute, when Lindsey Wilson’s Musa Mawanda put one in to knot things then.

Viera posted every shot on goal for Rio. Surprisingly enough, Luiz Filho did not post a single shot all evening as he was swarmed by the Blue Raider defense and had fits all night.

Starting Lindsey Wilson keeper Yuta Nomura was red-carded in the 28th minute, and Christoffer Gattara took over, providing nearly 83 minutes of scoreless goalkeeping.

From start to finish, this was a fiercely competitive matchup between the Mid-South Conference’s top two teams.

Rio returns to Evan E. Davis Field for a match with Bluefield College Wednesday at 7p.m.
