The Athens County Historical Society & Museum will host a one-night-only Pappy Mitchell exhibit on Tuesday, Oct. 8 from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Mitchell (1890-1983) was a local artist and an art professor at Ohio University. Many of his paintings and sketches depict the landscapes of Athens County, often in bright colors.
One of his paintings, believed to be the largest, is on loan to the Athens County Law Library. It will be unveiled at its new location at the Athens County Courthouse on Oct. 8 at 4 p.m.
Immediately following the unveiling there will be a reception at ACHSM, 65 N. Court Street, during which guests can see other Mitchell paintings on display. These paintings are on loan to the museum for the evening by private collectors.
During the reception, some former students and colleagues of Mitchell will speak about him. Both the unveiling and reception are free and open to the public.
