The West Virginia Senate is urging President Barack Obama and Congress to take measures preventing future chemical spills and to analyze the effects of crude MCHM on human health and environmental exposure.

The resolution approved Thursday asks the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Environmental Protection Agency to study the chemical that spilled in the Elk River last month. The resolution says the chemical's short-term and long-term effects to people and the environment have not been determined.

The resolution also points out that accurate data about the chemical's makeup remains unavailable.

The Senate also asks Congress to direct the Federal Emergency Management Agency to continue to provide water in affected areas of West Virginia.
