Ohio third-graders will have three new ways to show they read well enough to move on to the fourth grade.

Department of Education spokesman John Charlton says the added tests provide families alternatives to the Ohio Achievement Assessment, which is offered in the fall, spring and summer.

New tests being accepted are the Iowa Assessments, the Northwest Evaluation Association's MAP test and Terra Nova 3.

The Education Department made the three additional reading assessment tests available Wednesday as public school districts carry out the state's new Third Grade Reading Guarantee. The law requires meeting literacy targets to advance to fourth grade.

Charlton says districts will determine how assessments are used. He says the additions mean third-graders have both online and pencil-and-paper options, as well as either essay or multiple-choice format.
