The annual summer downtown music festival Boogie on the Bricks will be celebrating its 10th anniversary this year and will expand music to a second stage.
Scott Kreps, Boogie on the Bricks event coordinator, recently updated Athens City Council about some of the logistics of the event, which will be held June 21 from noon to 11 p.m. on Court Street.
The free event will feature music stages near the intersections of Court and State and also Court and Union. Music on the State Street stage will run from 12:30-11 p.m. and the Union stage will have music from 1-9:30 p.m.
Boogie on the Bricks features many local bands and highlights several area nonprofit organizations. Kreps said the event will also work with Rural Action’s Zero Waste Initiative to keep trash to a minimum.
Parking in the municipal parking garage on East Washington Street will be free for the event.
Event organizers have partnered with Athens County Children Services and the Dairy Barn Arts Center to provide children’s programming in the parking lot near Attractions (across from Court Street Diner). Kreps said there will be interactive activities for children including face painting, inflatables and crafts.
“We do consider this a family event,” Kreps said. “It’s a fun event; it’s a very lively event.”
Kreps noted that Boogie on the Bricks is a separate event from Ohio Brew Week, which will be held July 11-19. The two events used to occur simultaneously in prior years. Ohio Brew Week now has its own downtown music event held at the end of the week.
By having Boogie and Brew Week in different months, Kreps said that helps provide Athens with two great summer events.
