The Zanesville Community Theatre's next production is The Diary of Anne Frank, opening Friday, June 13 at 8 p.m.
The play will continue with 8 p.m. performances on Saturday, June 14 and Friday and Saturday, June 20 and 21.
There will also be two Sunday matinee performances on June 15 and June 22 at 2:30 p.m.
Director Matthew Harper has chosen to use a new adaptation by Wendy Kesselman, from the original stage play by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett.
The cast includes actors from Muskingum, Licking and surrounding counties who have done extensive research on the time period and the actual people they are portraying.
It has been of the utmost concern that cast members remember that they are not just acting as characters created by a playwright, but that they are trying to re-create actual people who lived and died during the Holocaust and World War II.
Actors appearing in this production include: Maren McClelland as Anne Frank; Cary Underwood, as Anne’s older sister, Margot; Eric Blake, as the girls’ father, Otto Frank; and Amy Underwood as their mother, Edith Frank.
Sharing the "secret annex" hiding place with the Franks are Don Roberts as Hermann Van Daan; Denise Harper as Petronella Van Daan; and Robert Blake Nessleroad as their son, Peter Van Daan. These two families are joined in their hiding place by Mr. Dussel, played in ZCT’s production by Anthony Harper.
Bethany Harper and David J. Kerr appear as Miep and Mr. Kraler, two non-Jewish business associates of Mr. Frank and Mr. Van Daan, who help to conceal the hiding place and make sure the families have supplies and as much safety as is possible. Phil Palmer and Rob Rager will also appear as Nazi soldiers.
This particular script is an adaptation for a new generation able to confront the true horrors of the Holocaust, and, as directed by Harper, to bring these people into a three-dimensional life briefly on the stage.
