The 65th annual Parade of the Hills festival kicks off Wednesday with plenty of entertainment, festivities, pageants and, of course, parades.
The annual event on the Nelsonville Public Square will run from Wednesday through Saturday and include activities for the whole family.
John Perry, chairman of the festival, said that the popular Rockin’ Robots will be returning this year — this time performing each day of the festival at 8 p.m. in the First National Family Fun Park.
“The kids loved it last year,” Perry said. Admission to the festival and children’s area is free.
Other entertainers this year will include Bee Gees tribute band Stayin’ Alive on Wednesday at 8:30 p.m., McGuffey Lane at 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, Mr. Speed (KISS tribute band) at 9 p.m. on Friday and The Hitch Hikers at 9 p.m. on Saturday. Tables may still be reserved for the evening entertainment by calling Stuart’s Opera House at 753-1924.
Perry said that festival organizers try to ensure that there is music for everyone at the event.
Carnival rides will be provided by Triple Treat Ride Co. again this year. The rides will open at 3 p.m. Wednesday-Friday and at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
Wednesday is Athletic Day at the festival beginning at 10:30 a.m. at Polly Field. Participants are encouraged to register for the games online at www.paradeofthehills.org. Free food will be provided for participants following the events.
Thursday is Seniors Day with activities beginning at 10 a.m. at St. Mary of the Hills Parish Hall with lunch served at noon. A Seniors Day matinee will be held free at Stuart’s Opera House at 1 p.m. The charity pie auction will take place at 6:30 p.m. at the Bell Tower Stage on Thursday. The annual auction raises funds for activities and entertainment in the First National Family Fun Park.
Friday marks the Ohio State Fiddling Contest at Stuart’s Opera House beginning at 6 p.m. General admission tickets are $8. The formal judging of the Miss Parade of the Hills contest will also take place on Friday at 7 p.m. on the main stage.
The Run for the Hills/Race for Life 5k run and walk will begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday. Registration will start at 8 a.m. at the Bell Tower Stage. The kids mini run will begin at 8:40 a.m.
The first parade of the festival is the Welcome Home Parade, which will begin at 6 p.m. on Wednesday. The Little Miss Parade of the Hills will be crowned on the main stage following the parade.
The children’s bike parade will be held at 6 p.m. on Thursday and the Grande Parade will start at Harper and Poplar Streets at 6 p.m. on Saturday. Crowning of the 2014 Miss Parade of the Hills and the presentation of the annual Roland Pierce Citizenship Award will occur following the Grande Parade on the main stage Saturday.
