A former central Ohio court clerk who pleaded guilty to theft in office has been sentenced to 18 months in prison.

Former Fairfield County court clerk Deborah Smalley pleaded guilty to theft in office and attempted theft in office, and other charges against her were dismissed.

A special prosecutor from the state auditor's office who handled the case said Smalley also was sentenced Monday to pay more than $16,000 in restitution.

A message was left for her attorney.

Authorities alleged that Smalley and her husband, David Smalley, stole thousands of dollars in salaries paid for work by county employees on her political campaigns.

David Smalley, of Bloom Township, pleaded guilty to theft in office and having an unlawful interest in a public contract. His sentencing is scheduled next week.
