River Valley Squeak By Lady Vikings

After dropping their first two conference games, Vinton County was looking for its first win in the TVC-Ohio as it took on River Valley on Thursday.

After missed free throws by River Valley, Vinton County put the ball in the hands of Michaela Puckett with a chance to win it with 5.7 left on the clock and the Vikings trailing by one point. Puckett raced down the court, but her buzzer beater didn’t fall as River Valley escaped with the 44-43 victory.

After the Lady Raiders jumped out to an early 8-0 lead midway through the first quarter, it seemed as if they might run away with it.

But as things started got more settled the Lady Vikings looked inside to junior forward Jordan Hale to get back into the game. Hale had all seven of the team’s first quarter points and drew the team within four, as the second quarter started 11-7.

They took that momentum into the second quarter as their stingy defense translated into a 15-11 lead for Vinton County halfway through the second. River Valley then returned the favor going on a 6-0 run to give the Raiders a 17-15 edge at halftime.

After a low scoring first half, both teams nearly doubled their scores within the third quarter.

Entering the fourth, River Valley clung to a 33-30 lead as the game remained close throughout the final quarter and the Raiders continued to hold onto their small advantage. And despite multiple attempts to take the lead, the Vikings still fell one shot short.

Vinton County (1-3, 0-3) will be back home Tuesday as it takes on the Shermans of Unioto (4-2, 4-0 SVC).
