Not everyone gets to celebrate their birthday with a bluegrass blowout at Casa Nueva. Then again, Adyn Bucher isn't your average Athens girl.

This Friday, The Jakob's Ferry Stragglers and The Shelf Life String Band (both from Pittsburgh) will perform during the Adyn's Dream String Band and Birthday Benefit Show. Adyn's Dream is a local nonprofit started by 10 (soon to be 11)-year-old Adyn Bucher, who was born with Spinal Muscular Atrophy. Funds raised at the concert will benefit families that have members living with the disease.

Andrea Baker's You Get What You Need: Stories of Fans of The Rolling Stones examines the online life of the band's fans, and how the social experience of rock concerts has changed in recent years.

Award-winning bluegrass group Rhonda Vincent and The Rage will return to Stuart’s Opera House this Sunday for a special matinee show at 3 p.m.

With a career that spans 24 albums, Vincent has worked with everyone from Dolly Parton and George Jones to Faith Hill. She has received more than 40 awards as a solo artist, including an unprecedented seven consecutive Female Vocalist of the Year awards from the International Bluegrass Music Association, along with multiple Grammy nominations.

The Foothill Folk Society, a group of individuals dedicated to teaching, promoting and preserving Appalachian arts and music, will present a performance at 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 30 in the Bennett Hall auditorium at Ohio University-Chillicothe.

As usual, my listening habits have been scattered everywhere this year. I will often binge on an artist's catalog, and this year was no different.

For me, 2014 was a return to regular radio after a hiatus, while finishing The Phantom Sessions recording of original music.

I managed to broadcast Jewelbox Radio on KKCR (Kaua'i Community Radio) throughout the first half of the year, and weekly all summer long on WDRT in Southwest Wisconsin, near my hometown.
