The Ohio University Concert Series has announced the addition of Ingrid Michaelson with special guest Rogue Valley on Thursday, Nov. 13 in OU's Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium. 

Over the past two years, Ingrid Michaelson--who released her sixth studio album, Lights Out, in April--has vaulted from overachieving indie-pop sweetheart to a bona-fide pop star.

Her 2012 release, Human Again, debuted at #5 on the Billboard album chart (plus the #1 slot on iTunes).

Stuart's Opera House will welcome two rising singer-songwriters this week when Sean Rowe and Catherine MacLellan perform special backstage shows on Tuesday, Sept. 16 and Thursday, Sept. 18, respectively.

In Africa, there is no word for traditional music in any language. The African tradition of music is ancient, rich and diverse—it's a way of life.

"In the western world, we isolate conceptually what we call music. For example, dancing, drumming, or singing. But in Africa, we bring all those categories together. We have to eat everything in the bowl to enjoy the salad," said Paschal Younge, an Ohio University professor of music education.

Afrobeat met Appalachia last night when Seun Kuti and Egypt 80 performed for a packed house at Stuart's Opera House.

Seun, son of the legendary Nigerian musician/activist Fela Kuti, led his father's former band through a set that incorporated jazz, funk and blues to create his own unique blend of afrobeat.

Haffa's Records transformed into a concert venue on Saturday, Sept. 6 when Aquabear Legion moved its 8th annual County Fair activities across West Union Street for the afternoon.

The two-day event, mostly held at The Union Bar & Grill in Athens, featured more than a dozen acts from around Ohio.

Saturday afternoon's show included Athens musicians Chris Biester and Adam Remnant, along with Joe Anderl of Dayton band The 1984 Draft.

Several times a year, Stuart’s Opera House teams up with Ohio University’s Performing Arts Series, African Studies Program and Arts for Ohio to present performances by outstanding African artists. This Thursday, Nigerian musician Seun Kuti, the son of acclaimed afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti, will perform at Stuart's with his late father’s band, Egypt 80.

Aquabear Legion’s dedication to spreading the Ohio music gospel continues this weekend as the Aquabear County Fair returns for an eighth year.

The event, which features 15 acts from Athens and around the state, takes place this Friday and Saturday at The Union Bar & Grill, with a Saturday afternoon in-store show at Haffa's Records.

Pages
