Sharon Jones and The Dap-Kings released their long-delayed fifth album on Jan. 14. Give the People What They Want was set for an August 2013 release date but ended up being postponed when Jones was diagnosed with stage II pancreatic cancer.

Now Jones is back with a vengeance, promoting the upcoming global tour and the new album, which, according to WOUB's Mark Hellenberg, is another winner from the Brooklyn soulsters.

For decades, Athens, Ohio, has been a hotspot for live music. But to limit the Athens music scene to just performance-based acts would be a mistake. For years, DJ culture has co-existed alongside local live bands, drawing huge crowds and providing an outlet for fans of electronic music.

WOUB's Bryan Gibson caught up with Dave Rave's Brandon Thompson and Dave Alexander to learn more about the Athens DJ/dance scene and how they became one of the most popular acts in town.

Live music fans, record collectors and film buffs will all have something to celebrate this Saturday at Stuart's Opera House.

The Nelsonville concert and arts venue is hosting a full day of music-related activities, including a set by "psychedelic Appalachian" guitarist Daniel Bachman, a screening of the documentary In Search of Blind Joe Death: The Saga of John Fahey and the ever-popular Record Sale and Swap in the lobby.

Stuart’s Opera House is expanding its newly created after-school music program and is accepting applications from students between the ages of 13 and 18 interested in joining, but the deadline is fast approaching.

The new session starts on Tuesday, Jan. 21. The deadline to apply is Jan. 15.

The opera house launched the program in the fall with the goal of creating a space where teens could gain confidence, build skills through music and receive hands-on instruction — all for free.

Since 2009, Angela Perley and her band The Howlin' Moons have toured throughout the U.S., received overseas airplay on the BBC and performed at the South by Southwest music festival in Austin, Texas.

The band is about to release its full-length debut, Hey Kid, and celebrate with a show in Athens--the town that gave Perley her musical start and the subject matter for the album's lead-off track.

The Athens Rock Camp for Girls and ARTS/West will present a benefit concert on Saturday, Jan. 18, featuring young musicians from past summer workshops.

The Athens Rock Camp for Girls builds self-esteem through music creation and performance. By providing workshops and technical training, it creates leadership opportunities, cultivates a supportive community of peers and mentors, and encourages social change and the development of life skills.

A handful of acts have been added to the 10th annual Nelsonville Music Festival, scheduled for May 29 to June 1 at Robbins Crossing on the campus of Hocking College in Nelsonville, Ohio.

Saturday headliners The Avett Brothers will be joined by Ray Wylie Hubbard, Shakey Graves, Pokey LaFarge, Grupo Fantasma, Pierced Arrows, The Men, Michael Hurley, Jessica Hernandez & The Deltas, Saintseneca, Motel Beds, Tweens and Tim Pfaff.
