The Ohio University Performing Arts Series will welcome the critically acclaimed PROJECT Trio to the Baker Center Theater on Wednesday, Dec. 4 at 7:30 p.m.

The Trio, now in its fifth year, is pushing the boundaries of classical music with a high octane mix of jazz, hip-hop, and rock.

The group is drawing new audiences to classical music and reinvigorating existing fans of chamber music through innovative performances, recordings and their 66 million YouTube views.

This Thursday, eight local bands will come together for the third annual Benefest, a two-night event consisting of back-to-back performances at The Union and Casa Cantina, the proceeds of which will go towards The Gathering Place and ARTS/West.

The event kicks off Thursday at Casa Cantina, starring local acts Method Air, Fathers of the Revolution, Von Lionson and Corbin Marsh, and bleeds into a series of performances on Friday night at The Union by Bright at Night, Small Steps, Mrs. Helen Highwater and Blonde.

Athens, Ohio band Scubadog returned to the stage after a year-long hiatus on Nov. 21. WOUB's Brooke Herbert Hayes and John Lortie documented the band's Casa Cantina show with photos and a recording of the song "David."

The 8th annual Hoopla in the Hills has released its initial lineup for the spring festival and will be releasing names of additional artists each day until New Year’s Eve.

The outdoor music festival will be held at Poston Lake Music Park in Stewart March 27-30.

Bands announced for the festival so far include two nights of Papadosio, EOTO, Keller Williams, Cosby Sweater with Joel Cummins, Up Until Now, Grammy-winning artist Chris Berry and Abou Diarrassouba, Larry Keel & Natural Bridge, EarthCry, Rumpke Mountain Boys, David Gans and Any Colour.

From 2009 to 2012, Scubadog shook up the Athens music scene with a heady blend of indie-rock and high-energy power-pop. After a year-long hiatus, the band returns this week with a special "revival" show at Casa Cantina, along with guests Maza Blaska and Wrong Hands.

Every year for the past several years, local classic rock band The Hitch-Hikers has hosted a benefit concert for the Nelsonville Food Cupboard.

Their events have been known to bring in about $6,000. But in order to provide more consistent support for a local nonprofit that provides food to nearly 14,000 people a month, one band member wanted to do something more.

“The once-a-year influx of funds is not enough to sustain the program,” wrote Jonathan Flowers, the band’s lead singer, in a letter to The Athens Messenger.
