Internationally acclaimed gypsy-punk ensemble Gogol Bordello will join Wilco, John Prine, Mavis Staples and over 40 other national, regional and local acts at this year's Nelsonville Music Festival, taking place May 30-June 2 at Hocking College.

Ohio University Zanesville will welcome Joseph Van Hassel to the stage on Thursday, March 21 at 7 p.m. in the Elson Hall Auditorium.

Van Hassel is well-versed in a wide variety of musical styles, including contemporary, orchestral, world, marching and jazz. His performance will consist of music for solo percussion instruments.

He will be performing pieces on vibraphone, snare drum with electronic accompaniment, orchestra bells with spoken text, and bass drum.

The music features a mix of more "modern" sounding pieces and music that is more immediately accessible.

The University of Rio Grande's School of Fine Arts will present two short operas by the American composer Giancarlo Menotti on March 2 and March 3.

Voice students of Adjunct Professor Valerie Tanner will perform Menotti's The Telephone and The Medium in the Bob Evans Farm Hall rotunda at 7 p.m.

The operas will feature Lucia Colley, Erica Cuckler, Aryn Gritter, Andy Knipp and Ally Waddell, along with Mrs. Tanner and James Sundquist on piano.

Singer-songwriter Anais Mitchell's new album Child Ballads, a collection of traditional songs from the Anglo-American folk tradition, is a collaboration with her friend Jefferson Hamer.

However, these aren't children's songs. In fact, most of these dark tales would send a child into therapy for a lifetime.

For over 10 years, Donkey Coffee has hosted up-and-coming songwriters in its back room. This Saturday the coffeehouse will showcase two more extraordinary artists: 12 year-old Aubree Riley from Athens, Ohio, and Lucie Zara from London, England.

Both young ladies are quirky singer-songwriters with a unique musical quality all their own.

To all outward appearances, Aubree Riley is an average sixth-grader. Yet to her family and close friends, she's a self-taught songbird with a yearning for the spotlight.

If recent trends are anything to go by, the vinyl LP--the large, sometimes crackly predecessor to the CD--is making a comeback.

Starting this weekend, local record store denizens will have one more piece of wax to add to their collections: Athens band Hex Net is releasing an LP version of its debut, Future Holds.
