American Municipal Power-Ohio has another 18 months to check out the possibility of building a power plant in Meigs County.

The additional time was requested by the utility and just granted by the Ohio Power Siting Board.

In 2008, the Siting Board gave AMP-Ohio approval to build a coal-fired power plant in Meigs County.

The OK was good for five years.

Later, AMP-Ohio announced it was cancelling the coal project and began planning for a generating plant which burns natural gas.

The 18-month extension gives the utility until September 2014 to continue planning for a possible "natural gas combined cycle facility" at the site, which is near Letart Falls.

The Ohio Environmental Council and the Sierra Club opposed the extension.

They claimed it was against the law for the Ohio Power Siting Board to allow a shift from a coal project to a natural gas project.
