Two award-winning Athens Middle School science teachers are gearing up their students for this year's science fair later this year.

Mary Ann Hopple and Stephanie List both received the Governor's Thomas Edison Award for Excellence in STEM education.

The award recognizes their work during the 2011-2012 school year, including bringing back the local science fair and coordinating an after-school science club.

After 47 students participated in last year's fair, Hopple says she is expecting about the same turn out.

"The students are just in the process of getting ready to do their whole projects," said Hopple. "And so some of them might decide that it is a little too much. At this point we're hoping for about the same number, we would really like to see an increase."

Hopple says once students pick their topic they will be given an Ohio University professor as a mentor.

The mentor will help students gather information about their topics.

OU will also provide the judges.

After the school-based science fair, students will have about four months to make adjustments to their project and move on to the district level competition in March.
