Black History Month Celebrated At OU-Lancaster

Ohio University Lancaster will mark Black History Month with an evening of music and historical reflection.
On Thursday, Feb. 28, jazz flautist Galen Abdur-Razzaq and Civil War historian Dr. Leonne Hudson will bring African American history to life on the Wagner Theatre stage.
The event is being put on by Ohio University Lancaster’s Diversity Committee and Cultural Events Committee.
"We are excited about the opportunity to learn about black history and celebrate it in an artistic way, through Dr. Hudson’s presentation and Galen Abdur-Razzaq’s music," said OUL Development Director Mandi Custer, who serves on the Cultural Events Committee. "We think this will be a rich experience for all who attend."
The evening will begin with Abdur-Razzaq, who will perform with his band at 6:30 p.m.
Abdur-Razzaq has performed at colleges and universities for more than 25 years. His music program is designed with a focus on the history of jazz as well as music theory. The aim of the performance is to provide an understanding and appreciation of this art form and its historical significance.
Following the concert, Dr. Hudson will make a presentation called "Supplying the Missing Pages in African American History." The Kent State University professor will talk about how black soldiers reacted to the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln.
Dr. Hudson received his Bachelor’s of Arts at Voorhees College and his Master’s of Arts and Ph.D. degrees at Kent State. His specialty is 19th Century U.S. History and his research interests include the Mexican War and the Civil War era. He is especially interested in the contributions of black troops.
The event is being supported by Farifield National Bank and is free and open to the public.
