A bomb threat was reported at about 9 a.m. at Athens High School Monday morning, according to officials still at the scene.

Deputies from the Athens County Sheriff's Office are on scene along with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and The Plains Volunteer Fire Department.

"We got a report of a bomb threat inside the building," said The Plains Fire Chief Randy Williams, who added that two of his firefighters were inside to assist with the investigation.

School officials did not immediately release information, but all students that were in the building were evacuated to the Scott Riggs & Family Stadium.

Some student were unaware of the need for the evacuation, some asking to retrieve purses, and some saying they believed it was a gas leak.

School officials were overheard saying the report was connected to a girls bathroom, but that has not been confirmed officially to The Messenger.

"We will release a statement when we are ready," said school administrator Lisa Love.

A news release by the Athens County Public Information Officer Network askes parents not to go to the school.
