A company has dropped its plan to open a moonshine distillery in Ravenswood.

Media outlets report that Appalachian Mountain Distillery decided to look for another site in Jackson County following opposition by some Ravenswood residents.

Mayor Michael Ihle says the city's zoning ordinance also was a factor. The proposed site isn't zoned for a wholesale distillery.

Appalachian Mountain Distillery vice president Dwayne Freeman says the company wants to stay in Jackson County but it doesn't want local people to be upset.

The distillery would have been located near the Independent United Brethren Church. Church member Ronald E. Hensley Jr. led a petition drive against the project.

Hensley says he didn't want to see alcoholic beverages sold near the church.
