While local girls teams begin on their playoff journeys Monday night, the boys teams now know thier playoff opponents following the reveal of sectional tournament brackets Sunday.

Many Athens County teams are sitting pretty, as Athens, Nelsonville-York, Federal Hocking and Trimble all need only one win to appear in the Sectional Semifinals at the Convocation Center on the campus of Ohio University. After a rough showing in the playoffs for many teams last year, 2013 appears to be the year that local teams can make a run to the district tournament.

Here is a breakdown of local sectional tournaments.

Division II- Logan Sectional

The Athens Bulldogs were elected to the No. 2 seed in the Logan sectional where they will face off against the No. 7 seeded Gallia Academy Blue Devils. These two teams met way back on Dec. 11 with the Bulldogs pulling out a hard-fought 50-47 victory on the road. The game will be played Feb. 22 at 6:00 p.m. at Logan High School.

Fellow TVC-Ohio rival Vinton County received the No. 3 seed, and like the Bulldogs, need only a win over Fairfield Union on Feb. 22 to advance to the district tournament. The two teams have not met this season.

Division III- Athens Sectional

The Nelsonville-York Buckeyes came out the winners on Selection Sunday, receiving the top seed in the Athens sectional. The Buckeyes will begin their playoff journey at McAfee Gymnasium Feb. 22 at 6:00 p.m. against the winner of the opening round game between Crooksville and Alexander.

The Federal Hocking Lancers also received a bye with the No. 3 seed. They will play No. 6 Meigs on Feb 23 at 7:00 p.m. The Lancers and Marauders have yet to meet this year. The Marauders have hit a bit of a snag lately, losing three of their last four games while the Lancers have also seen their share of struggles.

Other TVC teams in the sectional include No. 5 Wellston who will take on No. 4 Southeastern at 8:30 p.m. on Feb. 22. The Belpre Golden Eagles received the No. 7 seed and will play No. 10 River Valley in an opening round game Feb. 19 at 6:15 p.m. The winner of that game will take on No. 2 Zane Trace. As mentioned above, No. 9 Alexander will play No. 8 Crooksville at 8:00 p.m. Feb. 19 with the winner moving on to play top-seeded N-Y.

Division IV- Meigs Sectional

The big surprise this season were the Trimble Tomcats, who were rewarded with the No. 3 seed after a solid finish to the regular season. They will play No. 6 Miller at 8 p.m. Feb. 26 with a trip to The Convo on the line. The two teams split their regular season meetings, making this one of the more interesting tilts to monitor that night. There will be another TVC-Hocking clash that night at 6:15 between Southern and Eastern who hold the No. 4 and No. 5 seeds respectively. Waterford picked up the No. 7 seed where they will clash with No. 2 Symmes Valley Feb. 27. Finally, South Gallia has a long road ahead, as they will play St. Joe's in the opening round game Feb. 19 at 7:00 p.m.
