COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – Fifty new Ohio troopers are joining the ranks of the State Highway Patrol.

A spokesman said those cadets in the 159th class at the patrol academy would be assigned to two dozen posts around the state after Friday’s graduation.

Sgt. Vincent Shirey says that gives the agency just over 1,600 uniformed patrol personnel around Ohio.

The new troopers’ training included courses on criminal and traffic law, crash investigation, firearms, physical fitness and emergency vehicle operations.

The keynote speaker chosen for their graduation ceremony was state Rep. Cliff Rosenberger, a Republican who holds the top post in the Ohio House as its speaker.
