It was an intense night for the Trimble Tomcats as they entered their first playoff game against the South Gallia Rebels on Tuesday at Meigs High School. The rowdy fans made their feelings known that their team should come out on top, but unfortunately for the Rebels, the Tomcats earned their spot at the Convocation Center winning 71-58. They will now play the Franklin Green Bobcats on March 4th in the second round of the playoffs.

KEY PLAYERS:

Trimble’s season leading scorer, Randy Hixson, continued his winning ways with 38 total points.  His 10 point first half total allowed South Gallia to lead – up to the half.  But after the break, Hixson kicked into another gear.

Teammate, Max Hooper, added 12 total points along with 10 rebounds and 5 assists.

THE RUNDOWN:

The Rebels led at the half 26-22, in a low-scoring game. Both teams played tight defense and made 3-pointers all night. Neither team led by more than 7-points until the fourth quarter.

South Gallia’s Eli Ellis tightened the score to 43-41 with a nail-biting 3rd quarter buzzer beater from the opposite side of the court.

In the last quarter Trimble took over grabbing rebounds, getting steals and sinking repeated baskets while the Rebels struggled to keep up.

In the end, South Gallia slowed down the game by fouling the Tomcats, including Trimble scoring machine Randy Hixson who went to the foul line six times in the fourth quarter draining 10 of those foul shots.

Ultimately, those fouls cost the Rebels the game.

NEXT STEPS:

Even though they are the number-one seed, the Tomcats aren’t expected to have it easy going into the Convocation Center. Trimble is a shorter team compared to others in the conference.  They will need to guard the paint, making it more difficult for their opponents, the Franklin Green Bobcats, to get to the basket.
