Whirlpool Corp. executives and government officials will break ground this week on the company's $40 million expansion of its southwestern Ohio manufacturing plant that is expected to lead to 400 new jobs by 2018.

The Dayton Daily News reports that Greenville's mayor will join Whirlpool officials at the Wednesday groundbreaking ceremony.

The company said in March that strong demand for its mixers and other small kitchen appliances made in Ohio led to the planned expansion of its Greenville plant.

The plant that makes KitchenAid brand mixers and other products already employs some 1,000 full- and part-time workers. Whirlpool says the $40 million expansion will nearly double the size of its operation.

The plant about an hour's drive from Dayton is one of five Whirlpool plants in Ohio.
