Only 10% - 40 % of children of chronic alcohol abusers have FAS. However, data suggests that even non-FAS children were affected by their mothers' drinking; most notably they suffer behavioral and cognitive deficits.

As a mother consumes alcohol and her blood alcohol level rises, the embryo or fetus is exposed to the same blood alcohol levels.
