There is no single cause of eating disorders. Many factors play a role in their development:
- culture
- families
- life changes or stressful events
- personality traits
- biology

If you fear a friend suffers from an eating disorder:
- set a time to talk- discuss your concerns with your friend
- urge your friend to talk to a professional
- avoid conflicts with your friend- don't place shame, blame, or guilt on your friend
- don't offer simple solutions
- let your friend know that you will always be there no matter what

Treating eating disorders involves three components:
- restoring the person to a healthy weight
- treating the psychological issues sparking the eating disorder
- reducing or eliminating behaviors or thoughts that lead to disordered eating
- preventing a relapse
